My name is Max Ginsburg and I'm a painting instructor here at the League.
I am endorsing Sandra Kamerman, Jon Greenfield and Hsien Tan to the Board of Control of the League because they understand who we are and have the experience to lead.
Sandra, Jon and Hsien share my feelings about the League, its history and importance as an institution of learning in the world of art.
When I was an art student in the middle of the 20th century, the Art Students League was a shining example of a school where students could develop their skills and art to draw and paint realistically. Most schools were favoring "Modernism", Abstract Expressionism, etc. which was and still is the vogue in art. It was a struggle to develop as a realist artist in those years. My late friend and colleague, Harvey Dinnerstien, who was a marvelous teacher here at the League also had the same difficulties developing as a realist artist at that time.
Therefore, I feel that the tradition of teaching realist skills at the League should be continued and strengthened, not dissipated. Most of the other art schools do not provide this opportunity that so many art students are looking for. Therefore we should primarily continue to promote our tradition of teaching realist art.
I am suggesting this approach, teaching and promoting realist art with integrity. However, in addition, I feel it will attract more students to the League.
It is my pleasure and honor to be teaching at this great, historic institution,The Art Students League.
Yours truly,
Max Ginsburg
