Robin L. Frank

President, Board of Control

Art Students League of New York

Delivered via email to RFrank@artstudentsleague.org

Dear Robin,

We are writing to respectfully request that you appoint three monitors for the ongoing elections for the Board of Control of the Art Students League of New York (“League”), pursuant to By-Law XIV of the League’s constitution, and that one of these monitors be of our choosing, with the other two selected by the Cohen-Durkee-Bronkar and Forte slates.

As you know, this election season, we have witnessed several irregular actions that we believe undermine voters’ confidence in the transparency and impartiality of the process. These actions include:

  • Publishing four different versions of elections rules for candidates over the course of this campaign, including with changes made after nominations were submitted at the Members Business Meeting in October.

  • Changing the date of the Annual Members Meeting, in violation of the League’s constitution.

  • Neglecting to post candidates’ biographies and photos to the League’s website as has been done in years past.

  • Cancelling the first of two scheduled Meet the Candidates forums and rescheduling the second evening forum to the middle of the day, a time inconvenient to most members.

  • Using official League channels, personnel, and resources to promote our opponents and denigrate members of our campaign with defamatory statements.

These above actions appear inconsistent with constitutional and customary governance requirements. Moreover, they undermine our membership’s faith in the League’s electoral process and set dangerous precedents for future elections.

Given these concerns, the inclusion of an election monitor selected by our slate is not merely advisable, it is necessary to ensure procedural integrity, safeguard member rights, and maintain the appearance and reality of a fair and impartial election. We therefore expect that this constitutional safeguard will be honored without further delay. We further believe that, in addition to these monitors’ constitutionally-mandated duty of observing in-person voting during the Annual Members Meeting, they should also be afforded access to current ongoing aspects of the election process, including (but not limited to) conversations and meetings with the contracted election management firm and internal administrative meetings being conducted about the electoral process.

Accordingly, we request that one of the three required election monitors be designated by our slate. In the interest of fairness and transparency, we encourage that the other two selected are amenable to our opponents: the slate of Yoko Cohen, Steve Durkee, and Marcie Bronkar; and the campaign of Salvatore Forte. This will ensure a transparent electoral process that reaffirms faith in the elections for the

League’s Board of Control and affords every League member the opportunity to choose the board’s next leadership.

We thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Sandra Kamerman, Jon Greenfield and Hsien Tan
